Does my system need a powerflush?


In a Central Heating system, the primary ingredient responsible for transferring heat from your boilers heat exchanger to the radiators and hot water cylinder is water.

The most common Central Heating radiators are made from Iron.

When you mix water and iron with some oxygen rust occurs.

The radiators will start rusting on the insides and this will cause what we call Central Heating Sludge.

This central heating sludge will build up over time and it will cause a variety of central heating and boiler faults such as:

Blocked heating pipes, Central heating radiators will not heat up fully and you may notice cold spots on the radiator panel, boiler damage, sludge will enter the boiler and cause excessive internal wear on key boiler parts.

Central heating pumps 2 port and 3 port heating valves will develop faults quicker with sludge in the system.

Gas Bill’s will be higher due to the decrease in central heating efficiency.

  1. Central Heating Sludge, rust and limescale causes heating system leaks and blocked radiator pipes. ​Dirty water in your pipes causes the heating system to work harder, putting excessive wear on components and reduces efficiency which in turn increases gas bills.


  1. Central heating radiators do not heat up correctly due to the Central heating sludge/rust being a poor conductor for heat. This causes less heat from the radiators and more gas being used by the boiler to compensate for the lack of system heat from the radiators. See our how to test if you have central heating sludge.


  1. Gas boilers and combination gas boilers have many critical components and moving parts such as pumps, valves, heat exchangers. When central heating enters the boiler, sludge can cause damage and excess wear to these components. You may hear your boiler making banging, vibrating noises or a kettling sound.

What is a Powerflush?

A power flush is a specialist machine which connects to a central heating or hot water system.

It flushes water around the system at a high flow rate and allows dirty contaminated water to be dumped to the drain.



Can power flushing cause damage to my central heating system and boiler?

A system Power flush will not cause damage to your system. If there are existing leaks or weak fittings and components it will not fix these.



Can power flushing cause my central heating or hot water system to leak?

Power flush pumps use a high flow and low working pressure of water to flush. The power flush will remove central heating sludge and rust this may expose a pin hole in the radiators, radiator valves or pipe work.

What chemicals do you use in your Central heating Powerflush?

We use a chemical cleanser which contains no acid this is to prevent pinholes in iron radiators and aluminium heat exchangers. We use fx1 for descaling and neutralising crystals.

Once the system is clean central inhibitor is left in the central heating to protect and prevent rust.
